The Olympic Oath

The eminent sports ritual has come to an end. And India was able to savor something which it never did in the past-Six medals from six champions. These medals, this celebration has come at the right time for us, just before our Independence Day.

Starting with, Gagan Narang opened the account for India not just by winning bronze but by winning many hearts. Following up this was Vijay Kumar who carried silver and sent the message to the world that perseverance is the key to success no matter where you are.  An unassailable Saina assured us another medal. Well another woman champion, Mary Kom was not far behind as she gave us the sweetest medal. Yogeshwar Dutt added another one to our kitty. The flag bearer’s consistency ensured that we didn’t go empty handed on the last day.

But for a nation of 1.2 billion people, the participation itself was meager even considering the fact that the number of medals we achieved was subsidiary than what we had presumed. I think it is time we take an Olympic oath, an Oath for us, an Oath for our country, where we as a part of this incredible country would make a willful exertion in fostering varied games and cheer up children to take up sports seriously from school. By making sports education obligatory in schools and by equipping ourselves with the required infrastructure, our country can bloom from 6 champions to 60 champions in a quick spell. Taking inspiration from these champs, may our aspiring Olympic odyssey carry on.
